Plateau Attacks: 2 Policies That Their Introduction Could End The Incessant Killings In The State
The level of incessant attacks and killings in Plateau state is no longer news to the public. It should be recalled that within the last 30 days, there have been reports of several attacks and killings in the state. Apart from the recent wave of attacks and killings, the state appears to have become the metaphorical slaughter slab due to its past records of violent clashes that have claimed the lives of several people. There is no doubt that the police have made several arrests in connection with the attacks and killings in Plateau state. Sadly, this has not been able to bring the problem to an end. As such, it has become necessary to adopt other methods in handling the issue. In my view, there is the need to introduce two new policies in the fight against the barbaric attacks and wanton killings in Plateau State. These two policies are discussed below as:
1. Capital punishment It is arguable that even those that kill other people do not wish to die. As such, the introduction of capital punishment as a sanction for anyone that engages in violent attacks or killings in the state, would go a long way to serve as a deterrent. You will agree with me that if the killers were aware that what awaits them, if caught, is death, many of them would refrain from carrying out such violent attacks and killings as we are witnessing in Plateau state.   2. Extension of punishment to the suspect's loved ones. There is no doubt that even the killers always pray for the safety of their loved ones. Therefore, in order to instil fear in them, and compel them to refrain from carrying out criminal attacks and killings, whatever sanction that is to be meted out on anyone convicted for attacks and killings, should be equally extended to their family members.
It is often said that the greatest instrument for the control of human behaviour is fear. Arguably, the fear that if caught in the act, family members and loved ones could be negatively affected, would go a long way in persuading many of the killers behind the attacks in Plateau state to refrain. Therefore, I strongly believe that if these two policies can be introduced, they could be instrumental in ending the incessant attacks and killings in Plateau state.
